hpWouldn’t it be wonderful if we were able to end hunger in our community, one day that may be possible but not without your help!

Jewish Family Services’ annual Feinstein Challenge food and fund drive began Friday, March 1st and we are at 10% of our 30,000 meal goal.

We need your help! For every dollar donated to JFS we can purchase $6 worth of food to distribute to those in need through our Pearlman Food Pantry. Food donations (such as peanut butter, cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and other non-perishable food items) can be dropped off at JFS’ office at 2100 Lee Road in Winter Park through April 30th. Please contact us at (407) 644-7593 if you are interested in helping us reach our goal of collecting 30,000 meals to feed hungry families in our community.

SNAP Challenge: Eating on a Food Stamp Budget – MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger.

We saw this wonderful challenge provided by Mazon (an International Hunger Effort).  With a few modifications below, we thought it might be fun to do this locally in response to our HUNGER Doesn’t Take a Summer Break fundraising appeal.  Are you up for the challenge?

ONE WEEK (More if you want!)

The rules for the SNAP Challenge?  Can you do this?

  1. Each person can spend a total of $31.50 on food and beverages during the Challenge week. This budget translates to $4.50 per day, or $1.50 per meal.
  2. Keep all receipts and track all your food and beverage spending. Any food or beverages purchased and eaten during the Challenge week must be accounted for in your budget. For the purposes of this Challenge, you must include in your budget any amount you spend dining out.
  3. During the Challenge, eat only food that you purchase specifically for the Challenge. Do not eat food that you already have in your pantry or refrigerator (excluding spices and condiments).

What can you buy with SNAP?

YES:

  •  Food for the household to eat
  •  Breads and cereals
  •  Fruits and vegetables
  •  Meats, fish and poultry
  •  Dairy products
  •  Seeds and plants which produce food

NO:

  •  Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
  • Nonfood items
  • Pet foods
  • Household supplies (soap, paper products, etc.)
  • Vitamins and medicines
  • Hot (prepared) food

What to do during and after the SNAP Challenge:

  1. Share your personal experiences through social media, blog posts, op-eds to your local newspaper, or letters to your policymakers in Washington D.C. Be sure to share your thoughts with JFSOrlando as well. Tag us on Facebook (@jfsorlando) or Twitter (@jfsorlando #SNAP4aWeek) or email us.
  2. Donate to http://www.jfsorlando.org : your local nonprofit response to hunger, the additional amount you would have spent on food this week (or any amount you feel is appropriate).
  3. Remember this experience when you cast your ballot this Fall. Learn about food insecurity in your community, then ask your candidate(s) where they stand on food insecurity issues.

Have you ever been hungry… not known where your next meal was coming from…or how you were going to feed your children? What a tough situation to be in – to have to put your children to bed with empty bellies.

Hunger is a very large problem in Central Florida. 17% of the population of the state of Florida has food insecurities – that’s nearly 1 in 5 people!

At Jewish Family Services we are doing what we can to alleviate hunger.  But we need your help! We are getting ready for the annual Feinstein Challenge – our biggest food drive of the year. The campaign runs from March 1st through April 30th. This is a nation-wide event and community participation is essential. Please let us know if you can help by doing a food drive, or just bringing in some food items to our pantries. Next time you’re at Publix or Winn-Dixie and they have a Buy-One-Get-One, pick up one for yourself and one for someone in need.  Or when Albertson’s has the 10 items for $10, buy a couple for yourself and donate the rest to help stock JFS’ pantries.
